Well, here goes. I am blogging for the first time from my phone. I didn't realise that it would be this easy. Apparently, all I have to do is send an email to go@blogger.com and Voila! Here is to hopping this works as promised.

Celine Dion live
She drove all night, said Celine Dion as she stepped unto the stage last night at the Bank Atlantic Center in Surise, FL. There she was, right there, singing in her almost unmistakable flavor. "I drove all night", she sang, "To get to you". I imagine she said and will say the same thing at every location that she performs, but I truly believed that she was happy to be there singing specifically for this crowd, singing specifically for me.
My wife loves Celine Dion. When I first met my wife almost 10 years ago, she would play Celine Dion all day. And she knew so many of her songs word for word. She still does! As we walked through Sawgrass Mills last year and saw the posters announcing the concert, I was sure to make a mental note to purchase them as I figured my wife would be thrilled. And thrilled she was!
They say its a special thing when you can make a black women smile, well my wife was all smiles last night. Her face was glowing in a way that is still imprinted in my mind. I got my money's worth, not only from the concert experience, but even more importantly from the reaction that I got from my wife. She completed the entertainment package for me.
Not to say that Celine herself wasn't fantastic. Celine exceeded my expectations. At 41, she is still working that stage. Wow! She has incredible energy and even though the age is showing a bit in her face, that's about the only place that it shows, and just a little. Her voice is still superb! She is truly a spectacular performer.
I was struck with the sincerity of her performance. In between songs, she would talk with the crowd and tell us how happy she is to perform for us. She told us about when she opened the Bank Atlantic Center 10 years ago, and how much that meant to her. Of course, I am not that gullible to believe her just because she said it, but I admit I am inclined to, because of how she said it. She comes across as such a sincere individual. It could be clever acting, but I appreciated it none the less.
She did a number of her popular songs including "The Prayer" and of course "My Heart will go on". Her voice really does elevate you to a new place. The guy sitting to my wife's left, although looking like the tough type, broke down crying in the middle of one of her performances in french. For the rest of the concert his tough exterior had melted away and he was totally into the music.
Music is such a powerful medium. Last night I was reminded of how powerful it truly is. The amount of energy I had at the end of that concert was astounding to me. If she would have sang for another hour I would have been right there with her.
All the best for rest of your music career, Celine, you have definitely left your mark on our musical history and you continue to do so.

Post Office lines
It seems to me that some people always find something to complain about.
This morning I went to the post office to mail something to China. I don't know any body in China, except maybe my pen pal from 6 years ago who I sent one letter and she sent me two. By the progress of her English it's possible she isn't even in China anymore.
So why was I mailing China? Well it just so happens that one of my friends ordered a phone on eBay and not surprisingly she bought it from someone who lives there. Also not surprisingly the phone stopped working after 3 days. It doesn't even turn on! So my friend arranged for it to be sent back to China of course, with the hopes of being reimbursed her money.
The post office near my house is always full! I can barely remember a time when I have gone there and the line hasn't been all the way to the door. I don't go that often, so I'm wondering if I always choose the wrong time to go. In any event, its Christmas time now, so I suppose the line in the post office is always full at this time.
For the first 20 mins, it was a nice quiet wait. I was upset that the line was that long, but I found it within myself to consider the poor clerk who had to be assisting everyone. He seemed so knowledgeable and was doing what I thought was a great job!
But the quiet wait was promptly interrupted when a loud mouthed lady walked in and after a few secs started talking about how horrible the P.O. is and how they need to have more than one person at the counter. She went on and on and I wondered to myself how was she helping the situation. Chances are she was ticking off the man at the counter and casting a dull mood across the room. I could see more and more people show visible signs of agitation since she started lambasting the P.O.
Poor postal guy!
When it was my time, I tried to be as polite as I could be, because at least these people deserve some kind people to deal with. I wonder how patient I would be If I were in their shoes (another guy finally appeared at the counter). But I was impressed that they kept their cool and did the best job they could, in my estimation.
I really like the Post Office personnel. I like the system in general. My package to china was insured and I got a tracking number for what I thought was a good price.

PHP Firefox Search Plugin
I started a new job today and as I was setting up my workspace, I decided to create a simple php search plugin for firefox. You can usually locate these search engines in firefox at the top left corner.
It turns out this is a very simple process and involves creating an open search xml document. From what I understand even internet explorer supports this format.
The hardest thing was to get the php icon afixed to my plugin. I downloaded the ico file from http://www.php.net/download-logos.php. I then wrote a quick php script to base 64 encode it so that I could plop it into my xml document without having to worry about hosting the image somewhere.
Unfortunatly, since blogger doesn't let me upload arbitrary files for linking into this post. I had to upload my work to my server. If you are interested you can find it here http://fiwizone.com/alex/phpNet.xml
Much later after doing some poking, I found out that there was an open search document for php.net already written and posted on the php.net website. You can find it at http://us3.php.net/phpnetimprovedsearch.src

Jamaican women
We are currently in Phildelphia visiting my wifes mother. I find it pretty interesting that 3 years ago my wife, her mother and her grandmother all lived together as single women. My wife's mother got married about 2 1/2 years ago and her husband (then living in the United States for 20+ years) wisked her away to the United States, leaving the house one single woman less. How fitting then that I should take the next single woman and wisk her off as well.
So grandma unfortunately is left all alone at the house. Well sort of, she also has another single women in the form of her neice and her neice's son.
Right now I am talking to my indian friend and she wants to know why jamaican women are so domineering. Her theory is that its because they grow up in single family homes. I suppose that might make sense. If there is no man to take out the trash and do the disciplining the women have to step up.

Las Olas Art Festival
So last week Sunday, we were carried off by the lovely Such to downtown Ft. Lauderdale. As Such puts it, I am so lucky to have her as a friend as I finally get a chance to go out to nice places. She is constantly ragging on me for living in Ft. Lauderdale for 2 years and still having never been to Orlando, or South Beach or even downtown Miami. But no longer can she rag on me about downtown Ft. Lauderdale. It was fun! We went to see the Las Olas Art Festival. The art was pretty good, but the highlight for me was spending time with family and friend.
Upon arrival, we saw a starbucks stand serving complimentary coffee. I am not a coffee drinker, but who can turn down free starbucks which usually goes for as high as $4/cup. They were serving a new type low fat coffee called "Skinny Cafe Mocha" Its made with 2% skimmed milk and sugar-free syrup. Who ever heard of sugar-free syrup, I think that is the ultimate oxymoron. It didnt taste that bad though, and reminded me of the Swiss-miss mocha flavor.
One of the most interesting oddities about the ordeal was that just about everyone had their dog out from the french-cut poodle to the pitt bull. I think I will put it on my calendar to visit next year when they have the festival again.

Married life is good!
So far marriage life has been good. Take for instance January 1st, the start of a brand new year and also coincidentally my birthday. Despite feeling pretty guilty about it, I decided to fore go the usually watch night service celebration. This is where christians go to church and share testimonies and sing to ring in the new year. Not a bad idea, but after all the excitement of the wedding, honeymoon and post-honeymoon, my wife and I decided that it would be more beneficial to catch up on much needed sleep.
At 12:00 am January 1 2008, I was curled up on a comforter (we had yet to purchase a bed at the time) and zzzing away. I barely managed to talk to my dad who is always the first to call. My wife handled all the other calls while I laid my head down on the pillow. It's so good to have a wife! Later that morning, when I finally thought it was time to awake I noticed same wife walking into our bedroom with breakfast! Ham and cheese on toast with scrambled eggs, hot chocolate and a fruit platter of apples, mellon and strawberries. It was delightful. I had breakfast in bed although there was no bed.
For the next couple hours the wife and I just relaxed as married people do and then having worked up an appetite we journeyed down to Ft. Lauderdale for lunch turned dinner. She drove! Did I tell you its wondeful to have a wife. My richer friend Such, treated us to chinese food at P.F. Changs. I happended to mention it was my birthday and so the waiter served us dessert on the house. It was this wonderful flavour of icecream served with blue berries, raspberries, strawberries and bananas wrapped in some pastry thing. I ordered some kind of chicken and drank an orange marguirita. It was definitely a pleasant meal.
The ride back up to Boca Raton, where we live, was really nice. I decided to drive on the beach road. We stopped at one of the beaches, but my wife was not impressed and since parking was $2/hour, we decided to not stay for long. As we neared home, we stopped at the furniture store, which apparantly was open, and purchased our bedroom set. The funny thing was they were running a promotion that allowed us to get the set with no money down and 0% interest for a year. I had the money to pay for it but I decided I would rather invest that money especially because of the monthly payment. We qualified for a $0 monthly payment. So I don't even have to pay a cent till December. How sweet is that. I promptly stowed the money I was going to use on that away so that it won't get spent on rash consumer type spending.
So finally we got home and I must admit it was one of the best birthdays that I have had in 25 years. Very relaxing, lots of good food and just a great vibe.

10 days till marriage
Today is December 5, it is approximately 10 days till my wedding. Yippee! My fiance and I have been waiting more than a year for this and have been making plenty of plans and finally after what has seemed like forever it will be happening. I wonder alot about what it will be like to be married. I have heard plenty of good, but probably more bad, which I must admit gets me a bit worried at times. But I know I love her and I really want to give this a shot. Look at me, I am a young man under the age of 25 and ready to pledge my life to one woman for the rest of my life. I must be nuts! But I cant help but smile with enthusiasm on the inside. I already wish the wedding was tomorrow.

web 3.0
So web 2.0 is all the buzz, but what about web 3.0. As I have said many times I dont like the term web 2.0, and so I can not say that I am particularly enthused by web 3.0. But I atleast like the sentiment behind it, that is, that web 2.0 is just a passing fad and web 3.0 is where the real serious stuff will get solved. Here what Google's Eric Smidt had to say about it.

The problem of context
In reference to this article "What Orkut really needs", I have only one thing to say, and that in somes ways it reminds of the problem of context. Earlier in the year while mucking around the university of waterloo's website most notedly the Soshin Research group site, where my friend does research for his Masters degree I stumbled upon the idea of pervasive or ubiquitous computing. If you have never heard those terms before, they simply refer to the ability to embed more software into our environment and thus allowing our mobile devices to talk to the environment more effectively. To give an example this, it would be like stepping into a meeting and your phone knowing to change its status to silent or when listening to music answering your phone triggers the stereo system or TV to automatically lower it's volume.
How does this all relate to orkut? Well the problem outlined by the article is that orkut doesn't seem to be catching so well in the US but does much better in countries with other languages, most notably Brazil, which makes sense since allegedly orkut is a portuguese word that means "land of happiness". Should orkut be rebranded? Well in America, yes, but in other countries the name is just fine. Which presents another problem in context that is applications that are country aware or internationalization. You would imagine that your mobile phone should know that when you are in england you use pounds, and certain slang words mean different things and can talk to environment applications in england just as easily as it can talk them in whatever country you are coming from. The same would apply if you traveled to China or Israel. Interesting problem I think!

Gears, Zend and checkout!
So Its another weekend and I find myself battling it out with the Zend PHP framework. This has got to be the worse experience I have had using it, maybe I have been a bit too zealous seeking its wide adoption at my workplace. The fit is not yet over however. I still think I will pull off what I am trying to build with it. I need to, so I can present it to my group at work.
I did some more reading on google gears today and also am thinking that I might have been too anxious and giddy about seeing its wide adoption as well. It seems we might be a ways off from seeing a fully adopted standard towards offline browsing. I can cross my fingers and hope though. What was discouraging was that most of the nifty features in google gears like worker pools and local server caching were not available in the beta download. I had to get the development version from the project repository to get those working. Not very encouraging, but after I got that I still managed to like what I saw.
Google checkout was among the things I did some research on. I had in my mind started thinking about mobile applications that scanned RFID tagged goods that could suggest you purchase them online at cheaper costs. Such applications would then ask you to pay. I thought it would be cool if you didnt have to fill out any payment information but could just click a button to purchase and then I remembered that the google checkout project is aiming at doing just that. It seems someone is a step ahead of me.

Browser based apps that run offline!
People are really taking web applications a lot more seriously. Enter connectionless browser apps! So far there are a few frameworks and tools out their to give your browser the ability to run specially enables applications offline. This means we could see a lot of applications moving to the web. It makes sense though. Who really wants to download every application, especially those that are tied to the internet. I have to try out any of these frameworks for myself. I am thinking of giving google gears a whirl. So far it seems to be leading the back and they are pushing for an open framework for writing such applications that would be cross browser and cross platform. That would be nice!
Google Web Toolkit
Last night I had a date with google web toolkit. I have played with it before I was out to do a refresher course. So I got the latest version, now at 1.4 and I said I am going to figure this thing out and figure it out I did, well almost. I was able to use it to get a simple javascript application up and was trying to do some remote request stuff, which I was having problems with all the way up until I decided to quit and call it a night.
so what is GWT? Its a java framework for building javascript applications. Not everybody wants to take the time to learn how to write javascript, but just about everybody wants to get in on the new Rich Internet Application buzz. The solution is to create a compiler that takes Java (the most ubiquitous computer language) and converts it to an application that you can run in your browser with Ajax and All. I thought it was pretty neat. The interface for creating buttons and panels and labels and texboxes reminds of me of programming Java Swing. So if you are a great Java UI programmer you will have little trouble getting up and running with google web toolkit.

Google Tech Talks
One of my fondest discoveries on google code is Google Tech Talks. I just subscribed to the rss feed in my google reader. I have however noticed that some of the talks are really above my head or maybe just not relevant enough to me. I was just watching a snippet from "The Theoretical Limits of Statistical High Dimensional Nearest Neighbor Algorithms". I was suprised that I actually could make out some of the sentences in his opening statements, but then I remembered that I do have a B.Sc. in Computer Science. Thank God for that!
Google Code
At the beginning of 2006 I declared that I had 2 goals for the year and they were to work for google and become financially free. Financially free? ha! Work for google? ha! ha! I am always the dreamer. I did manage to post my resume on their website and it took them maybe 3 weeks to tell me that I wasnt suited for any of the positions they had open. I take this to mean one of two things. Either my resume actually made it past their filters and was reviewed by a pair of real human eyes or the backlog on submitted resumes was so much that it took their software that long to kick me back a response. I imagine it must have been the former since the computing power at google can handle millions of page views per day. It must mean that my resume was reviewed by a pair of eyes. As for financially free, well I did atleast became the richest I have ever been in my life at the time which means that my expenses were less than my income and my networth kept climbing upwards a trend which for the most part continues, but investing, I did too little.
All of this to say that the google code website is cool! Now, I really sound like I work for google. But I found code.google.com long before it got popular and have been tracking the development of all kinds of open source frameworks for google services. They even started a repository for open source development using google technology. Infact I think I will head over there now to see what I can dig up.

Frameworks
Frameworks are great I think. I have been spending the weekend working on a tool for work using the Yahoo UI framework for javascript client applications and the Zend PHP framework. Both take alot of the burden of writing certain tools from scratch. I am particularly pleased withe the Front Controller implementation in the Zend Framework. I have probably re-invented that wheel a million times over in my development efforts.
Web 2.0 Banana Boy
To be honest I was once in love with the buzz word "Web 2.0" and jumped on the band wagon of web 2.0 evangelists at the beginning of 2006. I was telling my friends about it and even introducing some of the related concepts to my work place.
Today I have jumped on the bandwagon of people who are more reticent about the buzz word. In fact, I now belong to the group of people who do not like buzz words in general. They make great marketing tools in one sense by getting the word out that something innovative is happening, but they are horrible at really getting people to understand what the implications are and in many cases people know the buzz word and regurgitate it profusely without knowing what they are really talking about.
An old friend of mine, upon realising that I was a web developer, coined the phrasing "web 2.0 banana boy" to describe me. I had a good laugh at the word and thought to myself that it was pretty novel. I am the farthest thing from a banana boy, as I think she meant by the phrase. She probably meant it in reference to my Jamaican background. I have never really been keen on being Jamaican and thats not just because I wasnt born there, but maybe its something in the air there that doesnt agree with me. But I must say Jamaica is a cool place. I don't mind being associated with the island and as most Jamaicans I take pride in hearing about all the great things Jamaicans are doing around the world. So web 2.0 banana boy it is! Sounds catchy I think.
Since I am a "web 2.0" developer and have found a certain level of sustained interest in it, particularly in "business 2.0" another annoying buzzword which simply relates to business models created around this web 2.0 buzz, I have decided to write more often on the subject as I attempt to sharpen my skills in these nascent ideologies.

Tagged!
I've been tagged by Adrian! The request is 8 things about me. This might be hard.
1) I live in Florida but my family lives in Jamaica. I say I left Jamaica because I wanted an adventure or maybe because I wanted less adventure.
2) I was born in Massachusetts but the last time I was there was when I was about 7 months old. I can't wait to go back. I was going this year but I had to cancel.
3) I think life in Florida is good, I am actually beginning to feel at ease here.
4) I go to church every Sunday and every Wednesday night.
5) I buy gifts for others more than I do for myself. Probably because half the clothes I buy I end up not wearing because it does not look good on me (It did in the store) and so I have an aversion to buying clothes and there are very few other things that I think I ought to buy. I don't even have a laptop because I don't really need one. I have almost 24/7 access to a computer.
6) I secretly want to be a billionaire, but I think everyone knows that now.
7) I read a lot.
8) I decided along time ago that I would be working with computers and I still am.
